The company was founded in 1994 under the name “Development Agency of Apodotia – Ophionia S.A. (ANETAPO S.A.)” to better utilize the natural resources of Mountainous Nafpaktia.
Following the implementation of Law 2539/97 (I. Kapodistrias), the Agency’s shareholder base expanded, with eleven (11) municipalities of Aetolia, as defined by its historical boundaries, joining. These included the Agricultural Cooperative of Messolonghi-Nafpaktia, the Federation of Associations of Nafpaktia, the Federation of Professionals, Tradesmen, and Merchants Associations of Nafpaktia and Dorida, and the Agricultural Cooperative of Dorida. The agency became interprefectural (Prefectures of Aetoloakarnania, Fokida and Evrytania) and interregional (Regions of Western and Central Greece), and was renamed “AITOLIKI DEVELOPMENT S.A.” or, in short, “AITOLIA S.A.”
In compliance with Law 3463/2006, the Agency was renamed “AITOLIKI DEVELOPMENT S.A. Local Authority Organisation” in April 2007. The Agency’s shareholder base expanded from 15 to 18 shareholders, with the inclusion of the Municipality of Aitoliko, the Municipality of Oiniades, and the Nautical Club of Messolonghi, in June 2008. As part of the policy to broaden the shareholder base and promote democratic planning, as well as improve collaboration among local authorities for regional development, the number of shareholders increased from 18 to 24 with the participation of the Local Association of Municipalities and Communities of the Prefecture of Aetoloakarnania, the Chamber of Aetoloakarnania, the Technical Chamber – Regional Department of the Prefecture of Aetoloakarnania, the Solid Waste Management Association of the First Geographical Unit of the Prefecture of Aetoloakarnania, the Association for People with Disabilities “Alkyoni” and the Association of Professional Fishermen of Aitoliko “Dolmas”, in November 2008.
In accordance with Law 3852/2010 (“Kallikratis”), the number of shareholders was reduced from 24 to 16, due to the merging of Municipalities. As part of the resolutions of the Agency’s Annual General Assemblies, regarding increasing the share capital, new shareholders joined the agency, including the Agricultural Environmental Group of Organic Farmers of Western Greece, the Federation of Associations of North-Western Dorida, the Nautical Club of Nafpaktos, the Commercial and Industrial Association of Messolonghi, and the Municipality of Xiromero.
